CQC registration document guidance

Care Home Floor Plan / Layout

Your care home floor plan should give CQC a clear picture of how the premises are arranged and whether the building is suitable for the service you intend to provide.

Why this matters for your registration

  • •CQC uses the floor plan to understand how residents, staff and visitors will use and move around the building.
  • •It helps demonstrate that the premises are appropriate for care delivery and aligned with Regulation 15: Premises and Equipment.
  • •A clear plan also supports the other premises documents in your application by showing where rooms, exits and key facilities are located.

What you should prepare

  • •A clear plan showing resident bedrooms, room identifiers and ensuite bathrooms where applicable.
  • •Communal spaces such as lounges, dining rooms, activity rooms and any quiet areas.
  • •Bathrooms, toilets, medication areas, staff rooms, offices, kitchens, food storage, laundry and cleaning areas.
  • •Fire safety information such as exits, evacuation routes, alarms and extinguishers.
  • •Accessibility features such as ramps, handrails, lifts and accessible facilities.
  • •Relevant outdoor areas, parking, waste disposal and any specialist rooms that form part of the service.

Before you submit

  • •Make sure the plan matches the real premises and labels rooms clearly.
  • •Check that fire exits and evacuation routes match your Fire Risk Assessment.
  • •Keep the layout consistent with your Environment Risk Assessment, occupancy evidence and planning documentation.
  • •Use a plan that is clear enough for CQC to understand how the building will operate as a care environment.
