CQC registration document guidance

Care Home Planning Permission

Planning Permission helps demonstrate that the premises you want to register are lawfully authorised for use as a care home.

Why this matters for your registration

  • •CQC needs assurance that the location in your application has the right planning status for the intended service.
  • •Your planning documents help show that the authorised use, address and any conditions are consistent with your proposed care home.
  • •Where change-of-use issues apply, CQC may need evidence from the local authority before registration can progress.

What you should prepare

  • •A copy of the current planning permission or equivalent confirmation relating to the premises.
  • •The correct property address, relevant use class where applicable and any conditions or restrictions affecting use of the building.
  • •Confirmation from the local authority if a change of use is not required or has already been authorised.
  • •Planning information that is consistent with your CQC application, occupancy evidence and other premises documents.
  • •Written clarification where the planning position is unclear or specialist advice has been obtained.

Before you submit

  • •Check that the planning documents relate to the correct premises address.
  • •Make sure the authorised use is suitable for the care home you intend to operate.
  • •Review any planning conditions or restrictions carefully before you submit.
  • •Keep the planning evidence consistent with your floor plan, legal occupancy evidence and wider premises documentation.
