CQC registration document guidance

Care Home Staff Training Plan

A Staff Training Plan should show how your care home will make sure staff have the knowledge, skills, competence and ongoing development needed to provide safe, effective and person-centred care.

Why this matters for your registration

  • •CQC expects providers to show how staff will be supported, trained and assessed before working independently.
  • •Your plan should demonstrate how training will reflect the residents you intend to support and the care home you are proposing to operate.
  • •It also helps show how you will meet Regulation 18: Staffing, including training, supervision, professional development and appraisal.

What you should prepare

  • •Your induction arrangements for new staff, including shadowing, policies, safeguarding, health and safety and competency checks.
  • •Mandatory and core training requirements relevant to your service, such as moving and handling, infection prevention, medicines and fire safety.
  • •Role-specific training for managers, senior staff, care staff and ancillary staff.
  • •Specialist training linked to the needs of the people you intend to support, such as dementia, autism, learning disabilities or end-of-life care.
  • •How refresher training, supervision, appraisal and additional learning needs will be monitored and reviewed.
  • •How the Care Certificate and relevant workplace competency assessments will be completed where applicable.

Before you submit

  • •Make sure the training plan reflects the real needs of your proposed residents and service model.
  • •Show that training differs by role rather than assuming every team member needs exactly the same programme.
  • •Explain what must be completed before staff can work independently.
  • •Keep the training plan consistent with your Statement of Purpose, staffing arrangements and specialist service model.
