CQC registration document guidance

Medicines Management and Prescribing Policy

Your Medicines Management Policy should explain how medicines will be managed safely and effectively, including the level of support you will provide and how risks will be controlled.

Why this matters for your registration

  • •Medicines management is a major safety area for CQC registration.
  • •CQC wants to see safe processes for administration, storage, recording, consent and escalation.
  • •The policy should match the actual medicines support your service intends to provide.

What you should prepare

  • •How medication needs will be assessed and reviewed.
  • •Different levels of medicines support and what staff can and cannot do.
  • •Arrangements for consent, refusals, mental capacity and best-interest decisions.
  • •Safe administration, MAR governance, storage, disposal and incident reporting procedures.
  • •PRN medicines, covert administration, controlled drugs, transport and delegated tasks where relevant.
  • •Training, competency and escalation arrangements for staff.

Before you submit

  • •Only include procedures that are relevant to the service you are actually providing.
  • •Make sure home-based medication arrangements are addressed if care is delivered in people's homes.
  • •Keep the policy aligned with consent, safeguarding, governance and care planning documents.
  • •Show clearly how medicines errors, omissions and refusals will be managed.
