A domiciliary care registration assessment should be answered from the reality of providing personal care in people's own homes. Applicants need to explain how they will coordinate safe visits, competent staff, changing needs and reliable oversight across a dispersed service.

These practice questions are not an official CQC script. They help proposed providers and registered managers test whether their application, policies, staffing plan and day-to-day arrangements form one credible operating model.

Practice questions about accepting and starting care

  • How will you decide whether the agency can safely meet a person's needs?
  • Who completes the initial assessment, and what information must be available before care starts?
  • How will consent, capacity, communication and equality needs shape care planning?
  • How will risks in the home be assessed with the person without unnecessarily limiting choice?
  • How will urgent or hospital-discharge referrals be managed when information is incomplete?
  • What happens if the requested package is outside the agency's competence or capacity?

Practice questions about visits, rotas and continuity

  • How will visit times include realistic travel and task requirements?
  • How will late, short, overlapping or missed calls be detected and escalated?
  • What is the contingency plan for sickness, weather, transport failure or sudden demand?
  • How will you balance continuity of carers with safe staffing and individual preferences?
  • How will people know who is visiting and how to contact the office outside normal hours?
  • How will electronic monitoring information be checked against care records and feedback?

Practice questions about staff working in people's homes

  • How will recruitment checks be completed before unsupervised work?
  • How will induction, shadowing and competency assessment reflect each worker's duties?
  • How will lone-working risks and staff safety concerns be managed?
  • How will observations, supervision and spot checks identify poor practice?
  • What happens when a worker raises a safeguarding concern or makes a medicines error?
  • How will staff access current care information and immediate management advice?

Practice questions about medicines, records and changes

  • How will each person's medicines support level be assessed and recorded?
  • How will staff competence and medicines administration records be audited?
  • How will changes in mobility, nutrition, skin integrity or cognition be escalated?
  • How will records remain accurate, secure and available to authorised staff?
  • How will families and health professionals be involved with the person's consent?
  • How will incidents, complaints and missed care lead to improvement across the agency?

Prepare evidence for a homecare interview

  1. 1Map the referral-to-care process from first contact to review.
  2. 2Test a sample rota for travel time, double-up calls, continuity and emergency cover.
  3. 3Connect key policies to forms, records, competency checks and management audits.
  4. 4Practise a scenario involving a missed call, safeguarding concern and sudden change in need.
  5. 5Explain how the registered manager will maintain visibility across a dispersed workforce.
  6. 6Check every answer against the submitted homecare application and statement of purpose.
