Supported living applicants need to describe clearly what regulated personal care they will provide and how that support remains distinct from a person's home and tenancy arrangements. Interview preparation should reflect the actual service model, client group and responsibilities agreed with each person.
The questions below are independent practice prompts, not an official CQC question list. They are designed to expose gaps between a written application and the practical systems needed to support people safely while respecting choice, rights and independence.
Practice questions about the supported living model
- Which parts of the service amount to the regulated activity of personal care?
- How are care and support arrangements separated from the accommodation agreement?
- Who is the landlord, and how will tenancy rights be respected?
- How will the service decide whether it can meet a person's needs in a proposed setting?
- How will people choose who enters their home and how support is delivered?
- How do the statement of purpose, contracts and care plans describe the same model?
Practice questions about choice, consent and restrictions
- How will staff support people to make everyday and significant decisions?
- How will decision-specific mental capacity assessments and best-interest decisions be completed?
- How will communication needs be identified and information made accessible?
- How will positive risk-taking be balanced with safeguarding responsibilities?
- How will the service identify and review potentially restrictive practice?
- What happens when family wishes conflict with the person's rights or expressed preferences?
Practice questions about staffing and shared support
- How will staffing reflect each person's assessed needs and agreed support hours?
- How will shared staffing be managed without reducing individual entitlement or choice?
- How will staff competence match autism, learning disability, mental health or physical support needs?
- How will waking-night, sleep-in and emergency arrangements be assessed and reviewed?
- How will staff respond when a person's needs change or a placement begins to break down?
- How will agency or unfamiliar staff obtain the information required for safe support?
Practice questions about safety and community life
- How will environmental and fire risks be managed while respecting the person's home?
- How will safeguarding concerns involving staff, housemates, visitors or the community be handled?
- How will medicines support be assessed, delivered and audited?
- How will people maintain relationships and access work, education and community activities?
- How will complaints be accessible to people with different communication needs?
- How will leaders know whether support is improving independence and quality of life?
Prepare a supported living evidence map
- 1Draw the relationship between the provider, landlord, commissioners and each person.
- 2Identify where personal care is delivered and which roles are responsible for it.
- 3Link consent, risk and support planning to practical records and review arrangements.
- 4Test scenarios involving a tenancy concern, safeguarding issue and change in capacity.
- 5Review staffing plans for individual hours, shared support, emergencies and continuity.
- 6Practise explaining how governance will compare quality across different settings.
